Elbow Pain

Understanding the Elbow

The elbow is a hinge joint that connects the upper arm (humerus) with the two forearm bones (radius and ulna).

Common Causes of Elbow Pain

1. Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow
  • Caused by overuse of the wrist (lifting, gripping)

2. Golf Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

  • Pain on the inside of the elbow
  • Caused by overuse of the wrist

3. Inflammatory Arthritis

  • Conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis or Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Cause joint swelling, warmth, and stiffness

Tennis Elbow and Golf Elbow can usually be diagnosed easily by examining the elbow only, without any tests.

If other causes are suspected, the doctor may order:

  • X-rays (for bone or joint damage)
  • Ultrasound or MRI (for tendons, ligaments, bursae)
  • Blood tests (if inflammatory arthritis is suspected)
First Steps in Treatment
  1. Ice the area – 15 minutes, 3 times daily
  2. Wear an elbow strap – placed about 2 inches below the elbow when doing activities
  3. Avoid painful activities such as:
    • Heavy lifting
    • Squeezing
    • Repetitive housework (wiping, scrubbing)
  4. Workplace adjustments:
    • Breaks every 10–15 minutes at the computer
    • Gentle typing, avoid hitting keys hard
    • Light grip on pens/pencils
Medications
  • NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory tablets or gels)
  • Help reduce inflammation and tendon healing
  • Use only under medical advice
Exercise Program
  • Start with gentle stretching exercises (as shown in clinic video)
  • Progress to strengthening once pain improves
  • Do daily for at least 3 months
  • Gradual and consistent progress is key
Further Treatments (if pain continues)
  • Steroid injections – reduce inflammation quickly
  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections – stimulate healing (more costly)
  • Surgery – rarely needed, only in chronic cases
Summary

Most elbow pain improves with rest, ice, activity modification, proper support, and a guided exercise program. Early treatment prevents long-term complications.
